Land Use Plan

In April 1993, Washington Township trustees adopted a township land use plan. The plan provides guidance for appropriate uses of land in the unincorporated areas. The zoning resolution provides the regulation to help implement the land use plan. Requests for re-zoning start with the zoning commission, and then rely on technical advice from Franklin County Development Department. Public meetings are then held before final action is taken by the Board of Trustees.

Washington Township has been actively engaged in land use planning in several areas. The township's Land Use Steering Committee began updating the existing land use plan in 2003 in partnership with the Franklin County Development Department. Township staff has worked with the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), Franklin County Development and the Franklin County Greenways Steering Committee in connecting the communities of northwest Franklin County to work together on land use, transportation and environmental concerns in and near the Hayden Run watershed. In 2004, the township joined the City of Dublin in launching a dialogue on regional planning with Union County townships, the City of Marysville and the Union County Commissioners along the U.S. 33 corridor that connects the communities. The group decided in early 2005 to pursue a regional plan for the corridor. Washington Township also partners with Franklin County and other townships and municipalities within the county in a comprehensive planning effort to protect the Darby Creek watershed, which includes a small portion of Washington Township.

Big Darby Accord

Ten jurisdictions in the Big Darby Watershed within Franklin County, including Washington Township, have resolved to work cooperatively to develop a multi-jurisdictional plan to outline preservation and growth, oversight, and enforcement strategies to preserve and protect the Big Darby Creek and its tributaries.
